Most researchers hear "open access" and think of article processing charges (APCs) of $1,000 to $3,000 or more. But thousands of peer-reviewed journals are Diamond open access: free to read and free to publish, usually funded by universities, societies or public bodies. This finder combines the DOAJ journal list with SCImago rankings so you can search only those journals, filter them by subject, language, country and quartile (Q1 to Q4), and check whether they are indexed in Scopus.
A Diamond (also called Platinum) open access journal charges no fee to authors and no fee to readers. Articles are peer reviewed and published under an open licence, and the journal's costs are covered by an institution, a learned society or public funding rather than by APCs. The DOAJ records for every journal whether it charges APCs; this finder shows the no-APC journals by default.
Load the data (it happens automatically), then type a keyword or pick a subject in the Journals tab. Every result is a DOAJ-listed journal with no publication fee. Narrow it down by SCImago quartile, language, country or publisher, and sort by the journal's ranking. If you also want to see APC journals, switch the fee filter and set your maximum price.
Open the Scopus tab and type the journal's ISSN, a DOI of one of its papers, or its name. An ISSN or DOI is checked live against the Scopus API and tells you how many documents are indexed and how recent the latest one is, which is the most reliable way to detect journals that claim a Scopus indexing they no longer have. Names are matched against the full SCImago source list of about 30,000 Scopus titles.
SCImago groups the journals of each subject category into four quartiles by their SJR score. Q1 is the top 25% of journals in that category, Q4 the bottom 25%. A journal can be Q1 in one category and Q2 in another; this finder shows the best quartile it reaches. Journals not covered by Scopus have no quartile and appear as "unranked".
Stick to journals listed in the DOAJ (every journal here is), verify Scopus indexing through the ISSN rather than the journal's own website, and be suspicious of any journal that promises publication in days or contacts you by email. Look-alike names are common: two journals can share a title while only one has the real ISSN.
